UPDATE - follow-up to CBG blending at 1.7% in H1; pipeline connectivity key to achieving 3% target: India reached a 1.7 percent blending rate for compressed biogas with domestic piped natural gas and vehicular compressed natural gas during the first half of the current fiscal year.

Sales Targets

Sales reached 115.9 million standard cubic metres between April and September compared to a combined fuel consumption of 6,800 million standard cubic metres. Total consumption is expected to hit 13,600 million standard cubic metres for the full year. Reaching the three percent blending goal requires total sales of 408 million standard cubic metres, meaning sales must jump by an extra 292.1 million standard cubic metres in the second half. Future targets demand a four percent blending rate for 2027-28 and five percent the year after.

Infrastructure Challenges

According to the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board, the country has 210 working biogas plants with an average capacity use of only 44 percent. Out of 308 plants currently being built, 247 lack any plans for pipeline connections. Connecting plants to pipelines guarantees daily buyers and lifts capacity use to between 65 and 69 percent.

Industry Actions

The regulator urged big companies to set their own biogas blending goals, buy more gas from independent makers, and build their own captive plants.

Context

This follows an earlier report, covered earlier on 05 Nov 2026: 'CBG blending at 1.7% in H1; pipeline connectivity key to achieving 3% target'. Compressed biogas serves as a green alternative to traditional fossil fuels in India's energy mix, helping cut down reliance on imported natural gas. Building proper pipeline networks remains a key step for moving gas efficiently from production sites to city gas distribution grids.
