UPDATE - follow-up to British Airways London-Chicago flight drops 28,000 ft, declares emergency: Report: British Airways Flight BA295 returned safely to London Heathrow Airport on Monday after a sudden drop during its journey to Chicago. The Boeing 777-200ER, registered as G-VIIA, departed from Terminal 5 at 11:50 am local time with a scheduled flight time of 8 hours and 40 minutes.
Descent and Emergency
Flight tracking data from Flightradar24 and FlightAware showed the aircraft plunging sharply from a cruising altitude of 37,000 feet down to roughly 9,000 feet while flying over Ireland. The sudden descent happened about 30 to 60 minutes after takeoff. According to CBS News, the aircraft dropped 27,000 feet over a period of several minutes in what appeared to be a controlled descent, and the airline declared an emergency mid-air.
Return and Landing
Following the steep drop, the plane turned around over Ireland and circled for a few hours to burn off fuel before heading back to London. A British Airways spokesperson stated that the flight landed safely after the airline's pilots responded to a technical issue. Passengers disembarked the aircraft normally, and airline teams are working to rearrange travel plans.
Context
Sudden pressure or technical issues at high altitudes often require commercial aircraft to perform rapid emergency descents to reach air with normal oxygen levels. Airlines routinely require pilots to undergo rigorous training for such unexpected operational events to ensure passenger and crew safety.
