Best‑selling British novelist and former MP Jeffrey Archer died on Monday at age 86, his publisher HarperCollins announced.
Career
Archer sold more than 300 million copies worldwide, writing high‑octane thrillers such as Not a Penny More, Not a Penny Less, 1979’s Kane & Abel and his final work, Adam and Eve, scheduled for release on Tuesday. Born in north London on 15 April 1940, he later moved to Weston‑super‑Mare, Somerset. He entered politics in 1969, winning the Lincolnshire seat of Louth and serving five years as MP before becoming Conservative Party deputy chairman under Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in the mid‑1980s.
Legal Trouble
In 2001 Archer was convicted of perjury after lying in a libel case against The Star newspaper, a case that had originally awarded him £500,000 in damages. He served time in prison and was released in 2003, after which he rejoined the House of Lords and remained a peer until his retirement in 2024.
Death and Reaction
HarperCollins UK chief executive Kate Elton, who edited Archer’s books, said the publisher was “devastated to have lost a writer who has brought joy to generations of readers — and a true friend.”
Context
Archer’s blend of political experience and fast‑paced storytelling made his novels popular across generations, while his legal scandal highlighted the risks of high‑profile libel battles for public figures.
