Organizers have officially unveiled the emblem for the 2032 Olympic and Paralympics as a pink cockatoo, following an accidental social media leak on YouTube. The design beat out the kangaroo, koala, and bin chicken. The crest of the Australian bird is styled in colors resembling an Olympic flame and shaped to mirror the host state of Queensland. An explainer video had briefly appeared on the event channel on Friday night, prompting officials to hold a hasty weekend news conference. Brisbane 2032 vice president Tim Mander and chief marketing officer Brent Hill called the early release a pleasant surprise, with Hill noting the publicity was incredible.
Launch And Reactions
The official community launch took place on Monday evening in the downtown Southbank parklands. Brisbane 2032 chairman Andrew Liveris stated the emblems promote the unique character of the Games. Lachlan Kennedy, an Australian sprinter who set a national record for the 100 meters at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games by running 9.85 seconds in July, attended the launch and praised the design for having soul. Mikaela Cojuangco Jaworski, who leads the IOC coordination commission for the 2032 Games, called the design a vibrant expression of the region. Brisbane Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner stated the emblems celebrate the city and its lifestyle. Organizers added that First Nations elements are included, viewing cockatoos as messengers linking people to place and ceremony. While centered in Brisbane, events will also span across the Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast.
