UPDATE - follow-up to Francis Halzen of Belgium wins Nobel Prize in Physics for 'ice cube neutrino observatory': Particle physicist Francis Halzen has won the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physics for his work on the IceCube Neutrino Observatory and finding high-energy neutrinos from deep space.
Prize Details
The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced the prize in Stockholm on Tuesday. Halzen is a professor at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, USA, and he figured out that ice at the South Pole can track tiny particles called neutrinos.
Observatory Impact
The Nobel Committee stated that the observatory tracks neutrinos coming from the distant cosmos. The data collected by IceCube gives researchers new knowledge about violent places where these high-energy particles form and could show unknown cosmic events.
Context
Neutrinos are extremely small subatomic particles that pass through matter almost without stopping, making them very hard to detect unless large detectors are built deep underground or inside ice sheets. The 2025 prize went to John Clarke, Michel Devoret, and John Martinis for quantum physics experiments.
