A fifteen-year-old boy lost his hand and part of his lower arm after a police dispersal grenade exploded during clashes between high school protesters and riot police in Lens, northern France. The incident happened as nationwide student protests entered their third week.
What Happened
Local newspaper La Voix du Nord reported that the teenager picked up the grenade before it went off. Pas-de-Calais prefect François-Xavier Lauch stated that an investigation has been opened, though he declined to comment on the exact circumstances of the incident. Lauch noted that between two hundred and two hundred and fifty demonstrators threw objects at police during the confrontation. The injury occurred on the eve of a nationwide day of student demonstrations. Students across the country are protesting against overcrowded classrooms, teacher shortages, underfunding, and deteriorating school buildings. The movement originally began in September in the Paris region before spreading across France.
Clashes and Damage
Clashes erupted in multiple cities, including Lille, where students fought with police. Officers fired tear gas shells in Toulouse, while demonstrators in central Paris attempted to force their way into a school by setting a fire. Education Minister Édouard Geffray reported that two dozen schools were targeted by arsonists and vandals. He added that seventy-eight teachers and at least one hundred and ninety students have been injured during the protests, while noting that overall student participation has declined in recent days. Protesters previously cited issues such as thirty-five students per class, missing chairs, a lack of science teachers for an entire year, dilapidated buildings, overheated classrooms, long school days, and a one-hour lunch break that is too short for everyone to get food.
Context
Student protests in France frequently target government funding decisions and public service conditions, often drawing heavy police responses involving tear gas and dispersal devices. These demonstrations reflect ongoing tensions between student unions and state authorities over the management and resources of the public education system.
