Universal to Re‑Release Nolan’s “The Odyssey” in Over 1,000 US‑Canada Theaters on Dec 11
Reported by Varun Krishnan (Senior Writer) · Variety ·
Universal Pictures will bring back Christopher Nolan’s three‑hour epic “The Odyssey” on Dec 11, showing it on over 1,000 theaters in the United States and Canada in every available format, from standard digital to the premium IMAX 70mm screen. The film originally opened on July 17 and earned $626 million in the domestic market and $1.8 billion worldwide, making it the highest‑earning movie for both Universal and Nolan. It ranked second in global box‑office receipts for 2026, behind only “Spider‑Man: Brand New Day.” The title was the first feature filmed completely with IMAX cameras and set two company records: it became the top‑grossing IMAX title ever, pulling in $550 million worldwide in its first three months, and logged the largest opening day for an IMAX 70mm release in the U.S. A limited IMAX 70mm engagement ran in early October, giving fans a taste before the wider re‑run. The story follows the Greek hero Odysseus, king of Ithaca, on his long trek home after the Trojan War. The cast is led by Matt Damon as Odysseus, with Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Charlize Theron, John Leguizamo, Elliot Page and Jon Bernthal among others. Variety’s awards analyst Clayton Davis notes that the film is poised for Oscar season, already projected to collect nominations in almost every major category and expected to win honors for best picture, supporting actress, casting, cinematography, editing, sound and original score. ## Context Re‑releases of blockbuster films are rare but can boost award buzz and give audiences a chance to see formats like IMAX 70mm that most theaters do not keep stocked.
