Blue Origin Pushes New Glenn Rocket Launch to January 2027 After Pad Damage

UPDATE - follow-up to Blue Origin pushes launch to January 2027 as it races to rebuild damaged launch pad: Blue Origin has pushed the return to flight for its New Glenn rocket to January 2027. CEO Dave Limp told employees in a memo on Wednesday that rebuilding the damaged Cape Canaveral launch pad took longer than expected due to summer weather delays. This new date is about 10 days later than the company's previous target.
The Recovery Work
The May explosion during a hot-fire test severely wrecked the Florida launch facility. Founder Jeff Bezos said last month that a December flight was still expected, and Limp noted that rebuilding at this speed has been tough. Even so, Limp praised the team for doing in six months what many thought would take years. The accident also delayed a planned mission to deploy 48 satellites for Amazon's Leo internet service.
Industry Impact
The delay slows down Blue Origin's effort to catch up with Elon Musk's SpaceX for commercial and government clients. Amazon has hired United Launch Alliance and Arianespace for launches in the meantime. NASA has also given Blue Origin several contracts, such as a lunar lander for the Artemis moon program.
Context
Private spaceflight companies often face heavy setbacks when launch infrastructure suffers major damage during tests. Rebuilding a pad safely while aiming to meet high-profile contracts requires balancing strict safety checks with intense schedule pressures. Ground facilities take months to fix, which directly affects satellite constellations and space agency timelines.
