The Crisis
Former Kerala throwball player Aswathy and her family are living in a plastic-sheet shed built in the work area of their sealed home in Thaliparamba after the Kerala Bank seized the property over unpaid loan dues.
Debt and Hardship
Family members include husband Nithin, daughters Akrutha and Aamia, and grandparents Sunila and Thomas. The family took a loan of 15 lakh rupees in 2018 by mortgaging 35 cents of land to build a house, but repayment stopped after Nithin suffered a leg fracture from a tree-cutting accident and the COVID-19 crisis hit. With interest, the total debt rose to 34 lakh rupees, and the bank sealed the house four months ago.
Relief from Lulu Group
Following media reports on the family's plight, Lulu Group Chairman M.A. Yusuff Ali intervened and cleared all the bank liabilities. Kerala Bank officials stated that house keys will soon be handed back to the family following the completion of formalities.
Context
Loan defaults due to medical emergencies and sudden loss of income often push vulnerable families into severe financial distress. Media reports and timely philanthropic interventions sometimes help resolve such critical housing crises.
