Airbnb Plans to Launch Custom Travel AI Agent in Early 2027
Reported by Varun Krishnan (Senior Writer) · TechCrunch ·
Airbnb plans to launch a custom-built artificial intelligence travel agent in the first half of 2027. The company announced the new launch timeline on Thursday alongside its third-quarter shareholder letter and earnings call. CEO Brian Chesky explained that traditional text-heavy chatbots are not well-suited for travel planning. He noted that eighty percent of travelers enjoy the research phase, such as looking at photos and comparing homes. Instead of a standard chat interface, the new Airbnb agent will use a library of hundreds of travel-specific components like maps, photos, calendars, and itineraries, building a custom interface in real time. The tool will also assist users throughout their trips, handling tasks like changing reservations, fixing payment issues, processing refunds, managing rebookings, and providing twenty-four-hour safety support. Over time, the platform expects the agent to expand into services and experiences beyond just homes and hotels. The release announcement accompanied strong financial results, with third-quarter revenue growing 19% to reach $4.87 billion and beating Wall Street estimates. Airbnb also raised its 2026 revenue growth forecast to the high teens.
Context
Travel companies are increasingly investing in artificial intelligence tools to help users navigate complex booking choices. Building a specialized interface rather than a text chatbot reflects how people visually browse for holiday options with family and friends.
