Keanu Reeves to Return as John Wick in New Animated Prequel Film

Keanu Reeves has officially signed a deal to reprise his role as John Wick in an upcoming animated prequel movie from Lionsgate.

The Prequel Story

The plot follows the early days of the legendary hitman as he takes on the Impossible Task. He must defeat all his rivals in a single night to free himself from the High Table and earn a life with Helen, the love of his life.

Cast and Crew

Animation veteran Shannon Tindle will direct the film, using a script written by Ryan and Kaz Firpo. The production team brings back Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee of Thunder Road alongside Chad Stahelski of 87Eleven Entertainment, with Keanu Reeves also serving as a producer alongside Point Grey.

Series Expansion

The broader John Wick franchise has already earned more than $1 billion at the global box office across five films, which includes the Ana de Armas spinoff titled Ballerina. Lionsgate is actively growing the universe with a fifth live-action movie currently in development and a separate standalone project centered on Donnie Yen's character Caine, the blind assassin.

Context

Animation allows filmmakers to stage complex action sequences and explore backstory elements that might be difficult or costly to produce in live-action formats. This prequel expands a major action franchise that has grown from a modest 2014 thriller into a massive cinematic universe.
