Postal worker arrested after three people injured in Des Moines post office shooting
Reported by Siddharth Deshmukh (Staff Writer) · CBS News - Crime ·

Police in Des Moines, Iowa, arrested a postal worker on Thursday after a shooting at the city's main post office left three people injured. Sgt. Paul Parizek said officers reached the scene within three minutes of receiving the first reports at 9:10 a.m. local time. The shooting took place on the second floor of the four-story regional sorting facility, which has a public service counter and sits just north of downtown. The suspect, identified as 39-year-old postal employee Jennifer Christine Pledger, left the building before police arrived. Officers found her less than 10 minutes later near the Des Moines River and took her into custody without any further trouble, recovering a 9mm handgun at the scene. Three people were hurt in the incident, though none of the injuries are considered life-threatening. The two shooting victims are women aged 45 and 53, while the third person is a 55-year-old man who was hurt while trying to get away. The two women made it to MercyOne Medical Center on their own, and a Des Moines police officer drove the injured man to the same hospital. The shooting also prompted safety measures nearby. Des Moines Public Schools placed a nearby elementary school, a welcome center, and a nutrition center under a secure status starting at 9:20 a.m., which kept people from entering or leaving until police lifted the restriction at 10 a.m. State leaders shared reactions online, with Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds stating she is in touch with the Department of Public Safety, and Sen. Chuck Grassley thanking first responders for their quick action.
Context
Post offices are federal workplaces that serve thousands of daily visitors alongside their regular postal staff, making them major public buildings in most cities. Law enforcement agencies typically treat active shooter situations at public facilities with a rapid multi-agency response to secure the area and help any victims. State and local leaders frequently monitor such incidents closely while local school districts implement temporary lockdowns as a standard safety precaution.
