Devon Conway has been ruled out of the ODI series against India after suffering a concussion in a fielding collision. He was taken to the emergency unit at an Auckland medical centre before the first ODI. Nick Kelly, who was due to join the squad for the third and fourth matches, will now arrive earlier. Matt Henry, who collided with Conway, has been cleared of concussion and remains available for selection. Auckland Aces batter Dale Phillips has been called up to the New Zealand A squad as a replacement for Kelly for the four‑day match against India A that starts on Saturday. India leads the series 1-0 and the second ODI will be played at Wellington’s Sky Stadium. In the rain‑curtailed first ODI at Eden Park, Virat Kohli’s fluent 74 and a 114‑run partnership with captain Shubman Gill steered India to a comfortable win. New Zealand were bowled out for 185, giving India an original target of 186. Rohit Sharma was out for a duck and two rain interruptions forced the target down to 143 runs in 32 overs under the DLS method. India reached the revised target with five wickets in hand. India’s pace attack, missing Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna, was led by Punjab duo Arshdeep Singh (4/70) and Gurnoor Brar (3/44), supported by Anshul Kamboj (2/22). Arshdeep took two wickets inside the powerplay as New Zealand slumped to 45/2. Brar, a 6‑foot‑5 pacer from Chandigarh, claimed a sharp catch to dismiss Tom Latham. Kamboj bowled 46 dot balls in his ten‑over spell, choking New Zealand in the middle overs.

Context

Concussion protocols in cricket require immediate medical assessment and removal from play, which is why Conway was taken to hospital and ruled out. The DLS method adjusts targets when rain shortens innings, explaining the shift from 186 to 143 runs.
