Superstar Salman Khan announced that his much-delayed war drama film "Maatrubhumi: May War Rest in Peace" will arrive in theatres nationwide on December 4. Salman shared the release date during a promotional event in Mumbai.

Production And Delays

Directed by Apoorva Lakhia, the movie was originally titled "Battle of Galwan" before being renamed. Salman explained that the delay happened because the team wanted to ensure the visual effects were flawless. He noted that the team initially expected to finish shooting in 45 to 50 days, but a lead female cast member sustained an injury and took time to recover. The film previously eyed releases in January, June, August, November, and earlier December windows before locking the December 4 date. Jio Studios will handle the all-India distribution of the movie.

Plot And Cast

The film draws inspiration from the May 2020 military standoff and the June clash in the Galwan Valley between Indian and Chinese troops. Twenty Indian Army personnel lost their lives during these clashes. Salman essays the role of Bikkumalla Santosh Babu, who laid down his life alongside 19 other soldiers from the 16 Bihar Regiment. The movie also stars Chitrangda Singh. Additionally, Salman returns to playback singing after 11 years with a track titled 'Teri Sexy Beauty' from the film.

Controversy And Censor Clearance

Salman previously unveiled the teaser on his 60th birthday in December last year. China's Global Times criticized the teaser, claiming it exaggerated cinematic facts. An Indian government source responded at the time by defending India's tradition of cinematic expression, comparing it to past films like 'Haqeeqat' and '120 Bahadur'. According to Bollywood Hungama, the film also faced content hurdles regarding China references amid improving diplomatic ties before finally securing clearance. The Central Board of Film Certification website shows the 4-minute and 43-second trailer passed on Wednesday, November 4, receiving a U/A 16+ certificate.

Context

Biographical war dramas in Indian cinema often draw heavily from recent military history to portray real-life bravery on screen. Films depicting modern conflicts typically navigate a delicate balance between artistic storytelling, military accuracy, and official board certifications.
