An intercity bus carrying children and teenagers to school crashed on Friday morning in eastern France, leaving two people dead and 16 others injured. The crash took place at around 07:00 local time in the town of Lent, located around 34 miles from the Swiss border, while the vehicle was travelling between Lyon and Bourg-en-Bresse.
Casualties And Rescue
The local prefecture and the Bourg-en-Bresse prosecutor's office confirmed that one minor and one young adult died in the accident. The bus was carrying 43 passengers in total, which included 15 children heading to middle and high schools in the area. Among the 16 injured survivors, three people sustained serious or critical injuries, while 13 suffered minor injuries. More than 100 firefighters, emergency services, and medical helicopters rushed to the site, deploying to take victims with serious injuries to a specialised hospital. The driver was also taken to hospital with injuries and has not yet been questioned by police.
Reactions And Details
Transport Minister Philippe Tabarot announced on X that he was heading to the accident site near Lent, a rural area north-east of Lyon. Local mayor Yves Cristin told French media that he arrived minutes after the crash and found people in shock, noting that the bus left the road, hit a tree, and landed in a ditch with its side torn off. The mayor also mentioned that there was some fog and a wet road at the time, but no major difficulties. Fabrice Pannekoucke, head of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, stated that there are no particular explanations or interpretations for the crash yet. Education Minister Edouard Geffray expressed his sorrow to reporters, stating that it is always a difficult moment when students are victims of such accidents. The local town hall was opened to provide shelter and coordinate with rescue teams.
Context
School transport accidents in rural areas often draw swift national responses due to the involvement of children and teenagers. Emergency protocols in France quickly mobilize regional prefectures, local mayors, and specialized medical transport like helicopters when mass-casualty crashes occur. Investigations into such road incidents typically examine factors like weather conditions, driver state, and vehicle safety.
