Opposition leader Pinarayi Vijayan says official residences in Kerala need timely repairs amid reports of poor conditions. Many of the bungalows, built in the Travancore era and spread across Thiruvananthapuram, are in a pathetic state because regular maintenance has been missing. Vijayan noted that media often label any repair work as “beautification”, suggesting it is wasteful spending. He recalled that repairs at the Cliff House, the chief minister’s official residence, were planned during his own tenure as chief minister but were halted when the LDF government left office, even though security departments had recommended them. When he later became opposition leader, he chose to rent a house instead of moving into the Cantonment House because that residence also required repairs, and he expected the rental to last only two weeks. He expressed surprise that the previous opposition leader, Mr. Satheesan, had lived in the same official house despite its condition. Vijayan urged that a clear policy should mandate annual repairs of all official residences without waiting for occupants’ clearance, while ensuring occupants are not inconvenienced.

Context

Official residences in Indian states are often historic buildings that need regular upkeep; neglect can raise safety concerns and become a political issue when repairs are framed as unnecessary spending.
