Indian Companies Boost Overseas Investments by 41% to Touch Rs 16.71 Lakh Crore
Reported by Arjun Sethi (Fact-Checker) · Indian Express - Business ·
Indian companies have sharply expanded their overseas investment footprint, with outward direct investment surging by 40.8% to reach Rs 16.71 lakh crore at the end of March 2026. This marks a major jump from Rs 11.87 lakh crore a year earlier, according to Reserve Bank of India data.
Leading Destinations
Singapore remains the top destination for Indian outward direct investment, with total exposure climbing 37% to Rs 3,52,822 crore and accounting for 21.1% of the total stock. The United Arab Emirates saw the most dramatic growth, with Indian investments soaring 160% to Rs 2,71,107 crore to take second place. Debt investments in the UAE skyrocketed nearly nine times to Rs 1,52,778 crore. The United States slipped to third position with Rs 2,31,782 crore, followed by the United Kingdom at Rs 207,575 crore. Together, Singapore, the UAE, the US, and the UK account for 63.6% of the total overseas investment stock.
Investment Composition
Equity investments rose by 31.8% to reach Rs 13.30 lakh crore in March 2026. Debt investments nearly doubled from Rs 1.77 lakh crore to Rs 3.41 lakh crore, pushing debt's share in total investments from 14.9% to 20.4% in just one year. Other major hubs like Mauritius and the Netherlands also recorded steady increases, while China accounted for a negligible 0.7% of the total stock at Rs 12,373 crore.
Context
These figures represent outstanding investments valued at market prices rather than fresh capital transferred during the single year, meaning exchange-rate movements and valuation changes play a role. Analysts point out that the heavy concentration of funds in global financial hubs and the sudden surge in debt exposure call for greater transparency regarding the ultimate destinations of Indian corporate capital.
