Aam Janata Unnayan Party leader and MLA Humayun Kabir was arrested on Tuesday during a by-election in West Bengal after a physical confrontation with police officers at his party office in Rejinagar. Hours prior to his detention, Kabir accused security personnel of intimidating voters and publicly told local residents to fight back using heavy wooden clubs known as mugurs. Police detained him on charges of trying to influence voters and incite public unrest.
Confrontation And Bypoll Context
Kabir had earlier cast his vote with family members and voiced strong anger over heavy police deployments near his home and polling booths, claiming the force took orders from Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari and comparing officers to loose guard dogs. Murshidabad Superintendent of Police Sachin Makkar stated that Kabir held no official status as a candidate or authorized election agent in this election, making his movement around the area unauthorized and prompting the police action. The Rejinagar seat opened up after Kabir won both Rejinagar and Nowda in the 2026 Assembly election and chose to keep Nowda. His son, Golam Nabi Azad, is now running for the Rejinagar seat under the AJUP banner.
Multi-Party Contest
The electoral battle features several candidates making the minority vote crucial. The BJP selected former district president Sakharav Sarkar, while the TMC chose Rabiul Alam Chowdhury alongside a rival faction candidate named Safiuzzaman Sheikh. Additional contenders include Mohammad Abdullahil Kafi from the Congress and Syed Asad Ali from the CPI(M). Polling also took place simultaneously in Nandigram as voters cast ballots across both constituencies.
Context
Election day tensions in Indian state polls frequently involve local political figures clashing with law enforcement over booth management and security deployments. Bypolls in closely contested seats often draw intense focus as regional parties test their local influence following recent shifts in state governance.
