Jeep has patented the new-generation electric Compass 4x4 in India, though the company currently has no official plans to launch the SUV in the country. The design filing may simply be a move to protect intellectual property rights, as previous reports indicated the third-generation model was commercially unviable for the Indian market.

Design And Features

The patented model matches the core design of the overseas version, featuring a seven-slot grille, sharp lights, and a rugged bumper with underbody protection. The vehicle measures 4,550 mm in length with a 2,800 mm wheelbase, offering a 550-litre boot capacity and improved rear legroom. Interior highlights include a 16-inch touchscreen, a 10-inch digital instrument cluster, and a Level 2 ADAS safety package.

Powertrain Options

Global variants of the new Compass include a mild-hybrid, a plug-in hybrid, and full electric versions. The full electric 4x4 variant uses dual motors to produce 375 hp and offers a range of around 600 km, with a DC fast charger capable of boosting the battery from 20 to 80 percent in 31 minutes. Meanwhile, Jeep is planning a separate made-in-India SUV by 2028 built on a Tata Motors platform.

Context

Automakers often file design patents in various countries simply to prevent other companies from copying their intellectual property, even when they do not intend to sell the product there immediately. As the automotive market shifts, companies frequently review their product lineups and launch strategies for different regions.
