Alliance Under Strain

Weeks after forming a joint front for the 2027 Goa Assembly elections, the Aam Aadmi Party and the Goa Forward Party are facing internal tensions over a possible tie-up with the Congress. The two parties launched the Goa First platform on September 13 as a non-BJP and non-Congress alternative, but some of their joint hoardings along the national highway were pulled down on Tuesday.

Differing Stances

GFP president Vijai Sardesai stated that voters want a grand alliance of all parties to defeat the BJP, using mango varieties like Mancurad and Alphonso to explain local political tastes. In response, the AAP asked Sardesai to clarify his stand and accused the Congress and BJP of running a joint venture that ruined the state. AAP Goa president Valmiki Naik stressed that the original agreement excluded the Congress due to past defections, noting that Congress MLAs had previously switched sides to join the BJP in 2019 and 2022.

Context

Political alliances in coastal states often shift as smaller regional parties weigh whether to join forces with larger national players or form third-front alternatives. Defections have shaped Goa's recent political history, leaving opposition parties cautious about who they trust in upcoming elections.
