The Union Cabinet approved the creation of an Integrated Transport and Logistics Authority to bring better coordination among different transport departments and plan for future infrastructure needs. The new apex body will be set up inside the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.

Key Functions

Minister of Information and Broadcasting Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that major sectors like railways, highways, and aviation will have representation in the new group. The authority will handle project planning, research, monitoring, and evaluation. It will also conduct technical checks and monitor projects worth more than Rs 500 crore, along with checking their impact after completion.

Data And Policy

The authority will build a national transport data repository by combining information from FASTag, the Goods and Services Tax Network e-way bill system, Vahan, GPS, and city traffic data. It will also help update the National Logistics Policy of 2022 and review short-term plans to match the National Transport Master Plan.

Context

India has traditionally faced challenges because different transport ministries plan their projects separately without enough coordination. Creating a central authority helps bring road, rail, air, and water transport together under one unified plan.

What Happened

The Union Cabinet approved the formation of the Integrated Transport and Logistics Authority to act as a single apex body for planning and reviewing transport infrastructure across sectors like railways, highways, and aviation.

Why It Matters

Fragmented planning across multiple transport ministries often leads to higher logistics costs and delays in project execution. A unified authority using data from sources like FASTag and GSTN e-way bills aims to make freight movement smoother and reduce the overall cost of doing business in India.

What Happens Next

The authority will be established within the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, where it will begin reviewing infrastructure projects above Rs 500 crore and integrating national transport data repositories.
