Ajit Agarkar has officially finished his time as the chief selector for the Board of Control for Cricket in India after taking charge in July 2023. The BCCI has now invited applications for the vacant role because Agarkar did not ask for an extension and showed no interest in continuing.

Reactions and Praise

Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir praised Agarkar on the social media platform X, pointing to three ICC trophies as proof of his strong belief in putting the team first. Former cricketer R Ashwin also supported Agarkar on his YouTube channel, noting that making tough choices like phasing out senior players is never easy. Ashwin was one of the senior players phased out during this period, yet he still called Agarkar a very good chairman of selectors.

Team Achievements

Under Agarkar, the Indian team reached the ODI World Cup final, won the 2024 T20 World Cup, won the 2025 Champions Trophy, and retained the T20 World Cup earlier this year. Back in August, this paper reported that BCCI officials planned to meet Agarkar about a one-year extension following tours to Sri Lanka, amid discussions about Rohit Sharma's ODI future leading up to the 2027 ODI World Cup.

Context

Sports selection committees often face heavy public scrutiny when making difficult choices about veteran players. Transitions in leadership are a regular part of international cricket as teams prepare for upcoming global tournaments.
