Individuals who handle foreign exchange for personal reasons do not need to follow the Reserve Bank of India's new FEMA reporting rules. Reserve Bank of India Governor Sanjay Malhotra shared this update on Wednesday after freelancers and small service workers raised worries.
Details
People do not need to report personal imports, exports, earnings, or spending in foreign money, no matter how much money is involved. This rule covers things like paying for apps, TV channels, newspapers, or getting paid for online tutoring and small software jobs. Small exporters with bills up to ten lakh rupees can use a simple self-declaration and an invoice instead of complex paperwork. This limit of ten lakh rupees applies to each separate bill rather than the whole year. Individual exporters and importers will not file reports directly on the Import Data Processing and Monitoring System. Banks and authorised dealers will handle this filing work for them.
Context
Foreign exchange rules help central banks keep track of money moving in and out of the country to maintain economic stability. Clear guidelines on such rules are important so that independent workers and small businesses can carry out daily digital transactions without facing legal trouble.
