Weather Outlook
Weather experts indicate a change in weather starting today, October 7, across Kolkata and nearby districts. From October 7 to October 21, which is Dashami, different parts of West Bengal will see light rain in phases, but heavy rain is less likely, though isolated thunder showers remain possible during the Puja days.
Monsoon Withdrawal
According to predictions by private weather research organization Weather Ultima, the southwest monsoon will gradually withdraw starting this weekend. Forecaster Rabindra Goenka states that the monsoon may leave West Bengal by the early part of next week, between October 9 and October 13.
Daily Forecast
On October 7, Kolkata and nearby areas may face strong humidity alongside short periods of moderate rain and lightning. From October 8 to October 10, the final phase of the southwest monsoon will bring cloudy skies, scattered thunder showers, and gusty winds, though weather will start improving from the second half of Saturday, which is Mahalaya. From October 11 to the first half of October 14, skies will mostly stay clear with morning temperatures dropping to 22-24 degrees Celsius. From the second half of October 14 to October 17, skies will turn partly cloudy to cloudy, with maximum temperatures dropping to 30-32 degrees Celsius and minimum temperatures rising to 24-26 degrees Celsius. Between October 18 and October 21, skies will turn clear to partly cloudy again, bringing cool morning breezes.
Cyclone Rumors
There is currently no threat of a cyclone on the West Bengal coast, as no depression has formed in the Bay of Bengal that could cause a disaster during Puja. Experts advise the public not to panic by looking at just one weather model since forecasts can change quickly.
Context
Durga Puja celebrations in West Bengal often coincide with the retreating monsoon season, leading to sudden shifts between clear skies and localized rain. Weather forecasts during this festive period help residents plan outdoor outings and pandal hopping safely despite unpredictable atmospheric conditions.
