The Missing Medal
Mirabai Chanu has finally won a medal at the Asian Games after competing across four cycles, calling the achievement peace and closure. Chanu can lift three times her bodyweight and has previously won medals at the World Championships, the Commonwealth Games, and a historic silver at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. Despite that major success, the Asian Games remained a gap in her career until now. Chanu says something always kept happening during or around the tournament, leading her to wonder why she faced continuous setbacks. Her longtime coach Vijay Sharma notes that they refused to blame bad luck, choosing instead to analyze and change their approach.
Trust and Strategy
To prepare for the Asian Games, Chanu and her coach adjusted their strategy by keeping training loads low during the Commonwealth Games. They avoided chasing a Commonwealth Games record and settled for a gold with minimal effort to keep her fresh. Weightlifting requires deep trust between the athlete and coach, with Chanu completely trusting Vijay to calculate the weights and strategy. During the competition, Chanu did not even know what weights she was supposed to lift or where she stood on the medal table. Vijay used split-second permutations and combinations to ensure she secured a silver while protecting her physical limits. Vijay compares this bond to other partnerships in life, noting that Chanu still asks him what sets to pick up even after winning medals at the World and Olympic levels. He previously witnessed a breakdown in trust in Sydney in 2000 when Karnam Malleswari won a bronze medal, a regret Malleswari held because her Russian coach did not fully trust her abilities.
Paris Pain and LA Future
Winning this medal in Nagoya also helps cover up the deep pain of finishing in fourth place at the Paris Olympics, a disappointment that lingered for more than two years. Both Chanu and Vijay felt a collective sense of wrong from Paris that photos and videos constantly reminded them of until this recent success arrived. Their next major challenge is the Los Angeles Olympics, where Chanu will move up to the 53 kg weight category. Moving to a higher weight class will provide relief from injuries and allow them to focus more heavily on performance. Chanu states that she immediately looks ahead to the next competition after every win, learning from each championship to find fresh motivation.
Context
Weightlifting at elite international levels demands extreme tactical calculation of body weights, entry totals, and lift attempts by coaches to secure podium finishes. Athletes often change weight categories late in their careers to manage physical strain, reduce injury risks, and maintain peak strength over long Olympic cycles.
