UPDATE - follow-up to Kashmir-born filmmaker held in U.S. likely to be freed soon, says family: Kashmir-born filmmaker Sheikh Arfat, 42, is expected to be released soon after his family said they are cooperating with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to resolve his case. Arfat was seized on September 24, 2026 as he arrived at Washington Dulles Airport and spent 11 days at the Caroline Detention Centre in Bowling Green, Virginia. The detention was described by the advocacy group Free Arfat Sheikh as unlawful. He entered the United States on a student visa to study film at Georgia State University and holds a pending immigration application that authorises him to live and work in the country. While in the U.S., Arfat’s film Saffron Kingdom earned awards at the Chicago Filmmakers Awards, LA Film and Documentary Awards, Melbourne Independent Film Festival, Wake Forest Film Festival and Anatolian International Film Awards. He currently resides in Alexandria, Virginia. The family’s statement said, “We are pursuing the case and cooperating with the authorities. We expect him to be free soon.”
Context
Detentions of visa‑holding visitors by ICE are sometimes challenged as unlawful, and advocacy groups often assist families in navigating immigration proceedings. Such cases draw attention to broader concerns about due‑process rights for foreign students and artists in the United States.
