Jamie George says the England rugby squad are hurt and upset by a newspaper report claiming player unrest over head coach Steve Borthwick's leadership. The report alleged that unhappy players wanted summit talks with Borthwick and Rugby Football Union chief executive Bill Sweeney during their summer tour in Argentina, where England beat Argentina 31-24 in July. It also claimed disagreements within the coaching group, concerns over man-management, and a training ground bust-up with Ellis Genge, alongside a 45-21 defeat to South Africa.

Team Response

Speaking to Rugby Union Weekly and Sky Sports News, hooker George stated that much of the article is untrue and called the timing of its release two days before a Test match shocking and clearly designed to divide the team. Current captain Maro Itoje called a leaders' meeting, where George, Itoje, and George Ford addressed the squad to ensure they remained focused. George insisted that the players are fully behind Borthwick, adding that robust two-way feedback and reviews are normal in international rugby.

Upcoming Match

England face Australia on Sunday in the Nations Championship at Allianz Stadium in Twickenham. Borthwick's side returns to the venue for the first time since a 42-21 loss to Ireland in February during a Six Nations campaign, holding a 38% win rate for 2026 despite wins over Fiji and Argentina. Harlequins prop Fin Baxter, who recently returned from a 10-month foot injury, will start at loosehead prop against the Wallabies.

Context

Allianz Stadium generates about 90% of the RFU's revenue, making matchdays vital for English rugby financially. National team head coaches in English rugby face intense scrutiny, particularly during autumn and winter international campaigns at this stage of a World Cup cycle.
