Demand for Quick Mart Plc's initial public offering outstripped the 2 billion shares on offer by almost 23%, with investors applying for 2.45 billion shares at 7.50 shillings each, the company said on Friday. The Nairobi‑based retailer received 18,492 applications, of which just over 18,000 Kenyan and East African retail investors secured a full allocation of 119.6 million shares. Forty‑four foreign buyers were allotted about 236 million shares, roughly half of what they sought. Four cornerstone investors – RWC Asset Management LLP of Redwheel Group, 337 Frontier, the World Bank’s International Finance Corp, and the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office through its Mobilist programme – backed the deal. After the sale, these investors will own 21.6% of Quick Mart, while Kenyan and East African institutional investors will hold 17.5%, regional retail buyers 5% and foreign investors 5.9%. The sole shareholder, Sokoni Retail Kenya Ltd., is divesting half of its stake. Sokoni acts as the holding vehicle for founder John Kinuthia and private‑equity partner Adenia Partners, the Mauritius‑based firm that controls the business. No new shares were created and the company will not receive proceeds from the IPO. Stanbic Bank and Stanbic Securities acted as lead advisers and sponsoring brokers. Quick Mart’s shares are set to begin trading on the Nairobi Securities Exchange on 12 November, marking the second Kenyan IPO of the year after Kenya Pipeline Co.## Context The oversubscription signals renewed investor confidence in Kenya’s equity market, which has seen its benchmark index rise 28% in dollar terms this year, placing it among the world’s top performers.
