New Documentary Explores the Hidden Physical Supply Chain and Human Cost Behind Artificial Intelligence
Reported by Deepak Mishra (Copy Editor) · Variety ·
What Happened
A new documentary film titled "The Technological Sublime" is heading to the Taiwan Creative Content Fest in Taipei to show the physical supply chain that keeps artificial intelligence running. Directed by Jannes Callens, the project traces the roots of AI from quartz mines in the Appalachians and lithium fields in Chile to chip plants in Taiwan, undersea cables, and click-workers in Kenya. The filmmakers aim to reveal the real material, ecological, and human costs behind the technology instead of treating AI as an invisible cloud.
Production and Partners
Director Jannes Callens previously made a documentary called "Dor (Longing)" about a young shepherd in Romania. Delegate producer Steven Dhoedt previously directed "Inside the Metaverse" in 2010. The production team has already filmed the opening scenes of the new movie and is currently working to secure the rest of its funding. The project is backed by Belgian broadcaster VRT while discussions continue with other European broadcasters. The team is also working with James Chia-Hao Hsu of Reel Asia Pictures as a partner in Taiwan. The film is a co-production between Visualantics, Cobra Films, Tag Film, and Reel Asia Pictures.
Context
Festivals like the Taiwan Creative Content Fest serve as major platforms for international co-productions to find funding, partners, and distribution deals across global markets. Documentaries addressing modern technology often rely on a mix of institutional grants, broadcaster pre-sales, and international co-production partnerships to finance shoots spanning multiple continents. The Taiwan Creative Content Fest runs from November 6 to 9 at the Taipei Nangang Exhibition Center and is organized by the Taiwan Creative Content Agency.
