Paul Howard, the son of Moe Howard from the famous comedy group The Three Stooges, died earlier this week in Manhattan at the age of 91. Throughout his life, he worked to protect his father's legacy by meeting fans at events and conventions to share personal stories and memories.

Family History

In 2015, Paul Howard hosted a nine-episode docuseries titled "Hey Moe, Hey Dad!". The show featured archival footage, family accounts, and interviews with family members of Moe Howard, Larry Fine, Curly Howard, Shemp Howard, and Curly Joe DeRita, alongside celebrity fans like Whoopi Goldberg, Billy West, and Leonard Maltin. His niece, Tessa Maurer, shared details of his birth from a book written by his sister, Joan Howard Maurer.

A Dramatic Birth

Paul Howard was born on July 8, 1935, at Doctor's Hospital in New York. His father was performing on stage in Boston at the time and received a telegram announcing the birth. A few days later, Moe Howard crashed a rented car into a cement lamppost in a heavy Manhattan rainstorm while rushing to pick up the baby and mother from the hospital. The crash injured Moe's face, and the sudden shock caused his pregnant sister-in-law, who was in the car, to go into early labor. She gave birth to her child prematurely at the hospital shortly after.

Context

Paul Howard spent much of his life keeping the memory of his father and the iconic comedy team alive for newer generations of fans. The Three Stooges remain a prominent part of classic American comedy history through their decades of short films and stage shows. He is survived by his wife Joanne and his daughter Jennifer.
