Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami has announced his retirement from Test cricket, ending a career in the format that began with his debut in 2013 against West Indies at Eden Gardens where he took nine wickets.
Career Record
The 36-year-old finishes his Test career with 229 wickets from 64 matches. He took five or more wickets in an innings six times, including his best figures of 6/56 against Australia in Perth in 2018. He also becomes the fifth Indian pace bowler to take more than 200 Test wickets.
Final Matches
Shami last played a Test match for India in the World Test Championship final against Australia at the Oval in 2023. Selectors made it clear they were no longer considering him for selection despite his hard work for Bengal in the Ranji Trophy, where he took 14 wickets in three matches. Before that, he took seven wickets in three matches for East Zone in the Duleep Trophy.
Farewell Message
In an Instagram post, Shami wrote that he was saying goodbye to the white jersey but not to the memories attached to it. He thanked his teammates, coaches, family members, and millions of Indian fans for their support. He also thanked the Board of Control for Cricket in India and the Cricket Association of Bengal for giving him the chance to grow.
Context
Test cricket is widely regarded as the most demanding format of the sport, requiring players to maintain peak physical fitness and form over five-day matches. Fast bowlers face a particularly high physical toll due to the repeated stress of fast-paced bowling over long spells. Retiring from the longest format allows veteran players to manage their workload and prolong their careers in shorter formats.
