Harita Bhadra secured a 200m bronze in 23.20 seconds and a mixed relay bronze at the Asian Games in Nagoya, becoming the first Indian after Dutee Chand to win a sprint medal. Her speed was first spotted by her physical training teacher Bala Sir in the traffic-filled streets while commuting to Udayachal school in Vikhroli from Kanjur Marg.

Background

Coming from a family where her father ran marathons, her mother practiced yoga, and her sister pursued classical dancing, Harita grew up with a strong focus on sports and admired Rafael Nadal. MSSA inter-school events gave her a start in the long jump, while her early junior competitions included memories of a false start and cheering parents. She later studied at Loughborough University in the UK and trained at Somaiya University in Vidyavihar.

Training and Rivalry

Harita trains under coach Rohit Mane at Reliance's Jio HPC in Navi Mumbai, where they plan her schedule together. She also shares a friendly rivalry with fellow trainee Unnati Aiyappa, the daughter of former heptathlete Pramila, who yelled for Harita to turn around and see the big screen when her bronze finish was announced.

Context

Major multi-sport events like the Asian Games bring together top athletes from across the continent to compete in disciplines ranging from track and field to team sports. Sprinters like Harita must balance intense physical conditioning, curve technique, and mental preparation to succeed on the international stage. Outside of athletics, she enjoys hobbies like painting, crocheting, and making jewellery to match her sister's fashion business while aiming for the 2027 World Championships.
