Supreme Court Flags Heavy Traffic and Vehicle Smoke as Major Causes of Delhi Smog
Reported by Aditya Chauhan (Staff Writer) · The Hindu - Health ·
UPDATE - follow-up to Supreme Court terms vehicular emissions major contributor to air pollution in Delhi-NCR: The air quality index in Delhi reached 391 on Friday, November 6, 2026, as a thick layer of smog covered the national capital. Thirty out of fifty-nine monitoring stations recorded severe air quality at nine in the morning.
Court Observations
Chief Justice of India Surya Kant led a Bench along with Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V. Mohana in hearing a suo motu case on the regulatory framework for air pollution. The judges pointed to heavy traffic on roads connecting Delhi to nearby towns like Ghaziabad, Greater Noida, Gurugram, and Faridabad. The Bench noted that poor people suffer the most from this toxic air while trying to earn a living during the festival season. On the issue of school closures or hybrid classes during high AQI levels, the court stated it will follow expert advice.
Official Updates
Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati told the court that stubble burning caused fourteen percent of the pollution on Thursday, November 5. She outlined steps taken across five major sectors, including entry rules for certain vehicles, geo-tagging of pollution control certificates, and action against smoky vehicles reported through apps and social media. The Bench will issue orders and resume hearing the matter on November 16 after the Diwali vacation.
Context
Delhi-NCR faces severe air quality drops every winter due to a mix of local vehicle smoke, dust, seasonal farm fires, and trapped weather conditions. Courts regularly step in with supervisory hearings to push government bodies to enforce anti-pollution rules more strictly.
