UPDATE - follow-up to Andhra Pradesh MPTC, ZPTC election results LIVE: Counting begins across 365 centres amidst high security: Vote counting is underway for 577 Zilla and 7,707 Mandal Parishad Territorial Constituencies across 365 centres since 8 a.m. on Saturday, November 7, 2026. State Election Commissioner Anil Chandra Punetha and senior officials are monitoring the process, which is protected by around 19,885 police officers deployed to prevent clashes between major political party workers. Early results and postal ballot trends show the ruling party taking an early advantage. In Kurnool district, candidates Lakshmanna, Gummala Keerthi, and H Padma won MPTC seats in Erragudi, M Kottala, and Dibbanakal respectively. The party is also leading in 14 out of 20 ZPTCs where postal ballots are done, and shows strong leads in Vizianagaram, Bondapalli, Dattirajeru, and Gajapathinagaram mandals. In Vizianagaram, 103 candidates await results for 27 ZPTC seats and 1,066 candidates contested 438 MPTC segments, with 11 MPTC seats already won unanimously. Tragedy struck East Godavari district before counting began, as 28-year-old Jana Sena Party MPTC contestant Garapati Divya passed away due to cardiac arrest in Damanthunigidem Panchayat of Devarapalli Mandal. Meanwhile, counting proceeds peacefully in ASR district across 11 mandals using 298 counting tables and 1,200 personnel, and in NTR district across nine places with 281 counting tables and 1,500 staff members. Palnadu district has established a three-tier security system with CCTV monitoring for sensitive zones. Voting also took place in the Kotia group of villages in Salur mandal of Parvatipuram Manyam district, recording about 35% turnout despite strong objections from Odisha regarding local body elections at the border.

Context

Local body elections in rural areas determine leadership at the grassroots level through Mandal and Zilla Parishads, which handle local development and administration. Postal ballots are typically counted first before electronic or paper votes from booths are tallied. Heavy police deployment during such counts is standard practice in regions with active political rivalries to ensure public safety.
