Indian stock markets set for Samvat 2083 with Sunday Muhurat trading session
Reported by Faizan Khan (Staff Writer) · Livemint - Markets ·
The Indian stock market will mark the beginning of Samvat 2083 with a special one-hour Muhurat trading session on Sunday, November 8, from 2:20 pm to 3:30 pm at the BSE and NSE.
Past Performance
While trading volumes are usually low during this symbolic hour, benchmark indices have historically performed well on these occasions. Over the last 15 Muhurat sessions, the Sensex and Nifty have posted gains 12 times. Returns have ranged from modest recent increases to a sharp six percent surge during the global financial crisis on October 28, 2008. In contrast, the market declined in 2017, 2016, and 2012.
Expert Outlook
Indian equities enter the new Samvat after a six-session market recovery, backed by renewed foreign institutional investor buying and lower crude oil prices. Ajit Mishra of Religare Broking advises investors to use the session for selective positions in strong companies rather than chasing momentum. Meanwhile, veteran banker Uday Kotak notes that Indian stock valuations are less expensive than a year ago, while warning that global technology volatility and geopolitical risks will continue to influence market sentiment.
Context
Muhurat trading is a long-standing Diwali tradition in India where investors perform symbolic trades to welcome prosperity in the new Hindu financial calendar year. Although the session lasts only an hour, it serves as a traditional launchpad for the market year ahead while drawing close attention from retail and institutional participants alike.
