Jithu Madhavan's Dark Comedy 'Scene' Delivers a Playful Reinvention for Suriya
Reported by Rohit Yadav (Staff Writer) · The Hindu - National ·
Director Jithu Madhavan's Deepavali release 'Scene' pairs actor Suriya with a cerebral dark comedy that rewrites conventional mass cinema tropes. In the film, Suriya stars as Inbaraj, an overachieving police officer bored with success who smokes constantly and wears home clothes to work. Inba has solved numerous high-profile cases, including the sensational case of the notorious Perfume Killer, even as his boss Stephen, played by Lal, refuses to accept his resignation.
The Antagonist And Style
The narrative introduces Eeswaran, played by Naslen, a stone-cold serial killer who adopts the modus operandi of the Perfume Killer for his business. While Inba is methodical and prepared, Eeswaran is vigilant and preemptive. The 149-minute film moves at a brisk pace supported by Ajmal Sabu's editing and Vineeth Augustian's stylish cinematography. Jithu Madhavan fills the screenplay with dark humor, continuing the signature style seen in his previous films 'Romancham' and 'Aavesham'.
Characters And Core
The story shifts gear with the arrival of Inba's father Iridayaraj, played by Anandraj, and his mother Selvi. Alongside Maya, played by Nazriya, these characters form a ragtag team of misfits hunting Eeswaran. The emotional core centers on the relationship between Inba and Maya, with Maya serving as a crucial anchor while Inba deals with a specific physical condition and personal insecurity.
Context
Dark comedies blend serious themes like crime and serial killing with humorous situations and eccentric character dynamics. The film industry often sees major star vehicles released during festive periods like Deepavali to draw large audiences to theatres. Such projects frequently experiment with established actor images to appeal to modern viewers.
