New AI Hardware
British consumer electronics brand Nothing is preparing to enter the AI hardware market with a screenless product scheduled to begin shipping in December 2026. CEO Carl Pei teased the upcoming device in a post on X on November 4, stating that it features "no new screen" and cannot simply work as a mobile app. The device houses a processing unit to run AI models and might use a form factor nobody has imagined yet or combine three of today's devices into one, alongside an attached image of an obsolete pager. The company has not yet disclosed the product's name, design, pricing, or specific capabilities, and remains unclear whether users will rely on voice commands or physical controls.
Productivity Focus
Pei described the device as a practical productivity tool rather than trying to find the next big consumer gadget, arguing that looking for the "iPhone of AI" today is a dead end. He pointed out how important ideas from everyday conversations often get lost because people have to pull out their phones to write them down, disrupting the moment. According to a report by TechCrunch, the device aims to help people capture useful information from everyday interactions and handle practical tasks with minimal user intervention. Pei also noted that apps will eventually disappear as AI software evolves, disrupting startups whose core value relies solely on standalone apps.
Context
Consumer hardware companies are exploring dedicated artificial intelligence devices that go beyond traditional smartphones and computers. Earlier attempts at standalone AI gadgets, such as the Rabbit R1 released over two years ago, faced major challenges including negative reviews, limited app functionality, and security flaws.
