When to Replace Your Tawa

Rotis often give the first clue when a kitchen tawa reaches the end of its life, according to dietitian and certified diabetes educator Kanikka Malhotra. For non-stick tawas, warning signs include deep scratches that show grey metal underneath, peeling or bubbling coatings, and food that sticks even when using oil. Dark patches that do not wash off also signal trouble.

Checking the Base and Heat Risks

For any tawa, testing the base involves placing it on a flat surface and pressing the edges. A rocking pan means uneven contact with the flame, which burns rotis in some spots while leaving them raw in others. Other red flags include a loose handle, cracks, and a persistent burnt or rancid smell. While a rusty iron tawa usually just needs cleaning and seasoning rather than replacement, overheating poses a real safety concern. Non-stick coatings can break down and release fumes above roughly 260 degrees Celsius when left empty on a high flame, causing flu-like symptoms in humans and proving fatal to pet birds. Using a medium flame during preheating helps prevent this damage.

Lifespan by Material

Different materials last for varying periods. A daily-use non-stick tawa typically lasts two to five years, while a cast-iron pan can endure for decades if properly cared for. Stainless-steel tawas often last ten years or more. Worn non-stick surfaces can expose underlying aluminium, which matters for people with kidney disease, and older pans may contain PFOA chemicals. Proper upkeep involves using soft sponges and wooden or silicone spatulas for non-stick pans, drying cast-iron pans over a flame with a thin film of oil, and using baking soda for stainless steel.

Context

Kitchen cookware undergoes daily thermal stress from heating and cooling, which naturally degrades materials over time. Different metals and coatings react differently to heat, moisture, and scrubbing tools, making proper maintenance essential for both food safety and equipment longevity. Choosing the right material for specific cooking tasks helps extend the usable life of everyday kitchen items.
