The Incident

A 28-year-old laboratory technician named Darya Shipilova died on October 2 in Siberia, raising global concerns after her death at the Irkutsk Research Anti-Plague Institute sparked fears of a potential pneumonic plague leak. World Health Organization officials stated that the UN agency does not know what caused the woman to fall ill and pass away, with epidemic management head Maria Van Kerkhove noting that authorities do not understand how she became infected.

Official Response

Russia's public health watchdog, Rospotrebnadzor, has not linked the fatality to plague, maintaining that extensive tests showed no evidence the employee's illness came from any pathogen she handled at work. Moscow officials state she died from ordinary pneumonia, while local authorities have kept information tightly controlled and state-controlled media largely avoided reporting on the matter. According to the Indian Express, the U.S. Embassy in Moscow subsequently issued a health alert and urged Americans to avoid travel to Russia.

Context

The Irkutsk institute was founded roughly a century ago to study plague in a region where the disease is naturally found. Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump stated he plans to discuss the situation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio also called on Moscow to share clear information about the incident.
