India has proposed senior career diplomat Sudhakar Dalela as its next ambassador to Nepal. Dalela currently serves as secretary for economic relations and the BRICS Sherpa.

Official Process

India sent its formal proposal seeking host country approval, known as an agrément, on Tuesday. The ambassador post in Kathmandu has been vacant since career diplomat Naveen Srivastava retired earlier this month.

Diplomatic Background

Dalela has past experience handling relations with Nepal, having worked as director for the North division between 2006 and 2007 and joint secretary for the North division from 2016 to 2019. He also served as India's ambassador to Bhutan from 2022 to 2025 and worked in Indian missions in Brasilia, Chicago, Dhaka, Geneva, Thimphu, and Washington. His career includes a role as director in the Prime Minister's Office from 2009 to 2011, focusing on South Asia, East Asia, the Indo-Pacific, and the Middle East, alongside experience in trade policy at the commerce department and the World Trade Organization.

Context

Diplomatic postings between neighbouring countries like India and Nepal require formal approval from the host government before a new envoy can officially take charge. Choosing an experienced career diplomat for Kathmandu highlights the importance India places on maintaining steady, traditional bureaucratic ties with its northern neighbour.
