Choosing the right breakfast can prevent early‑morning blood‑sugar spikes in people with diabetes.

Foods to Eat

Tanay Mandowara, a diabetes reversal coach and nutrition expert, says a diabetic breakfast should include protein, fibre and other nutrient‑dense foods. He recommends besan chilla made from gram flour and mixed with vegetables such as onions, tomatoes, spinach or capsicum for protein and vitamins. A vegetable‑loaded poha, prepared with peas, carrots, beans and capsicum, adds fibre that slows carbohydrate absorption and reduces glucose spikes. Eggs remain a popular protein source for non‑vegetarians, while non‑vegetarians can also enjoy chilla with veggies.

Foods to Avoid

Avoid foods that are high in calories but low in nutrients, especially those loaded with added sugar or simple carbohydrates. Such items cause a rapid rise in blood glucose, followed by a crash that can bring mid‑afternoon lethargy and tiredness. Portion size should be tailored to an individual’s blood‑sugar level, medication and overall diabetes plan.

Context

Breakfast is the first meal that introduces carbs to the bloodstream after an overnight fast; controlling the quality and amount of those carbs is a key strategy for managing overall blood‑sugar levels in diabetes.
