Kerala Muslim League names Hindu leader as state vice-president

Kerala's Indian Union Muslim League has picked 61-year-old C. Syam as its new state vice-president, marking the first time a Hindu leader has held a top post in the party.
Background
Syam is a former state leader of the Democratic Youth Federation of India and joined the Muslim League in 2010. He comes from a prominent upper-caste Nair political family in Alappuzha, and his uncle R Sankara Narayanan Thambi served as the state's first Assembly Speaker. Following the party's decision to remove ministers and legislators from organizational roles, Syam received charge of the Idukki and Pathanamthitta districts.
Political Context
The appointment comes while the party faces accusations of communal polarisation from the Left and pressure from Muslim clerics toward conservatism. While this marks a first for a top leadership post, the party has previously included non-Muslim leaders, such as inducting Dalit woman Jayanthi Rajan as a national assistant secretary and backing Christian Congress leader V S Joy in Malappuram during the elections.
