U.S. President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that he should win the Nobel Peace Prize but acknowledged doubt about his chances. The Norwegian Nobel Committee will announce the 2026 award on Friday. Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, Mr. Trump stated that it is about that time for him to receive the honor. He claimed he has done stuff that nobody else has ever done, telling reporters he settled eight conflicts since taking office last January. According to the Indian Express, he also stated that it would be a great discredit to the Nobel Committee not to honor him. Mr. Trump mentioned that he was very honored to receive the prize indirectly last time when Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado gave him her 2025 Nobel Peace Prize medal in January. She handed over the medal while seeking U.S. support for her efforts in Venezuela. The leaders of Cambodia, Israel and Pakistan have said they nominated Mr. Trump, though there is no way of verifying those nominations. Meanwhile, parties to some conflicts Mr. Trump claims to have resolved dispute his diplomatic role, and fighting has flared again in regions including the Democratic Republic of Congo and along the border between Cambodia and Thailand. A resolution to Russia's war in Ukraine has also eluded Mr. Trump. U.S.-Israel strikes on Iran have led to a seven-month simmering conflict that has upended global energy supplies and driven gas prices up before November's midterm elections. Pope Leo, the International Criminal Court, and the special rapporteur for the Palestinian Territories are among the favorites to win this year's prize.

Context

The Nobel Peace Prize is awarded annually by the Norwegian Nobel Committee to individuals who have done the most or best work for fraternity between nations. While heads of state and various international figures are frequently nominated, the committee's deliberations remain strictly confidential for fifty years. Such announcements routinely draw international attention and debate over diplomatic achievements and ongoing global conflicts.
