Caleb Flynn, a former music pastor who appeared on "American Idol" in 2013, has been sentenced to life in prison without parole for killing his wife, Ashley Flynn, in Ohio. Judge Jeannine Pratt handed down the sentence on October 5 at the Miami County Common Pleas Court, following a jury verdict that found him guilty on all nine counts. Prosecutors stated that Flynn shot his wife as she slept on February 16 and staged the home to look like a break-in. He must serve 16 years for firearm and evidence tampering charges before his life term begins, and he was ordered to pay $20,000 for funeral costs.

Trial Evidence

The jury reached its verdict on September 29 after about two hours of deliberations, rejecting Flynn's claim that an intruder shot his wife while he slept. Trial evidence included police body camera footage, Apple Watch and iPhone activity data, and testimony from Alleigha Botner, a former church intern who read text messages exchanged with Flynn. In one message, Flynn wrote that he wanted his wife dead and gone. Prosecutors also secured evidence tampering convictions because his gun was never found. Flynn did not testify in his own defense, and his defense team called no witnesses.

Reactions

Before receiving his sentence, Flynn read a statement apologizing for his decisions and for breaking his marriage vows, though he continued to deny killing his wife. Ashley's sister, Kayla Keyt, told the court that the murder caused Flynn's daughters to question their faith, while her husband, Matt Keyt, requested the maximum penalty. Letters from Flynn's two daughters were read aloud in court, with both asking him to confess and one stating she would never visit him in prison.

Legal Next Steps

A Dayton law firm filed a notice of appeal on October 7 with the Second District Court of Appeals of Ohio, and Flynn has requested a court-appointed attorney. His former trial lawyer, L. Patrick Mulligan, stated that his firm would not handle the appeal and argued during the trial that evidence of an affair did not prove murder. The defense noted in a court filing that Flynn has no prior criminal record.

Context

A music pastor serves as a spiritual leader and musical director who guides a church's worship services, choirs, and bands. Criminal trials involving domestic homicide often rely heavily on digital evidence, including mobile phone activity and personal communications, alongside forensic findings. Defendants convicted of aggravated murder and related charges retain the right to appeal their convictions through higher state courts.
