Union Minister Suresh Gopi has stated that he will not return to ask for votes unless a foundation is laid for an All India Institute of Medical Sciences campus in Keralam. Speaking in Thrissur on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, the BJP MP maintained this stance amid a public dispute with State Health Minister K. Muraleedharan over the State's two-decade-old unrealised dream of getting an AIIMS.

Controversy

The political row grew after the Union government recently informed the Kerala High Court that an AIIMS in Keralam is not an immediate priority for the BJP-led Central government. The Centre explained that the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana scheme concentrates on States with weak healthcare infrastructure, whereas Keralam possesses a robust medical and research ecosystem. This statement led the High Court to question if the State's superior health indicators actually prevent it from getting an AIIMS.

Sites And Politics

Mr. Gopi blamed past Left Democratic Front and United Democratic Front governments for failing to pursue the State's demand and for not submitting any concrete proposals or possible sites to the Central government. He suggested the Kerala Agricultural University campus at Vellanikkara in Thrissur as his primary choice and Alappuzha district as a second choice for the institution. He also claimed that former Revenue Minister and CPI leader K. Rajan along with other non-BJP politicians support his demand for Thrissur. Denying that the Centre opposes the project, Mr. Gopi noted that Union Health Minister J. P. Nadda previously told Keralam MPs the State would receive an AIIMS at the appropriate time.

Debates And Pushback

Mr. Gopi also denied allegations from the media that his talks with Mr. Muraleedharan and Chief Minister V. D. Satheesan indicated a BJP-Congress deal, and he challenged Mr. Muraleedharan to an open debate. Mr. Muraleedharan dismissed the challenge on Wednesday by stating he does not view Mr. Gopi as a conventional politician in tune with Keralam's aspirations, while also daring him to produce a definite location proposal.

Context

Major federal health infrastructure projects like AIIMS require close coordination between State and Central administrations regarding land allotment and funding priorities. Debates of this nature often highlight political friction between regional parties and the national government over resource allocation and administrative delays.
