Pargat Singh was named president of the Punjab Congress on Oct 2, sparking a short‑term ceasefire in the months‑long factional feud that threatened the party’s 2027 Assembly election campaign. The high command chose a figure acceptable to both rival camps – the group led by former chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi and the faction headed by Amrinder Singh Raja Warring. Within hours of the announcement, Channi met Singh in New Delhi and Singh confirmed he also met Warring. Singh said his first task is to pull the party together ahead of the 2027 polls and will start his tenure with a visit to Amritsar accompanied by AICC in‑charge Sachin Pilot. The duo will tour the Durgiana Temple, St Paul Church and Ram Tirath Temple before Singh formally takes charge in Chandigarh on Oct 11. Singh, a three‑time Jalandhar Cantonment MLA, former India hockey captain and ex‑Education and Sports Minister in Channi’s brief government, is seen as a neutral choice with a clean, non‑controversial profile. The rift had erupted after the Channi camp, including Gurdaspur MP Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, pushed for Warring’s removal, arguing he could not lead the party into the February assembly polls. Early September saw the high command replace AICC in‑charge Bhupesh Baghel with Pilot, whose feedback suggested keeping Warring would not restore confidence. Warring later met Rahul Gandhi, resigned as state chief and said “Channi sahib has won”, hinting Pilot favoured the change. Party insiders view Singh’s rise as a compromise, not a win for either side, noting that elevating Channi or Randhawa would have alienated leaders like Partap Singh Bajwa. Former minister Vijay Inder Singla was also in contention but lost support from a senior Gandhi‑family ally. The immediate effect is an unusual show of unity: Channi, Randhawa and Warring have all praised Singh’s appointment. Singh likened the shift to a change of captain rather than a purge, saying factions are a “narrative” and every senior leader has a role. He warned that party workers have little standing outside Punjab and the Congress, and that winning the 2027 election is the sole target. While continuity in working presidents and election committees reinforces this message, the calm may be temporary as leaders with chief‑ministerial ambitions re‑emerge when ticket allocation and campaign strategy come into play. Singh’s authority now rests on high‑command backing and the lack of a fresh grievance; his real test will be converting endorsements into sustained organisational work.
Context
The Punjab Congress is the state wing of the national Indian National Congress, and internal factional battles often affect its electoral performance. Leadership changes are used to project unity and improve chances in upcoming state elections.
