Congress parliamentarian Rahul Gandhi headed a delegation of opposition MPs to Raj Ghat for a silent demonstration on the third day of protests targeting Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The legislators first met for a lunch gathering at a restaurant named Moets located in Connaught Place, and then boarded shared buses to reach the destination. This transport tactic mirrored the previous day when a similar joint meal took place at a Janpath eatery followed by a bus journey towards Jantar Mantar.
Police Interception
The prior day's demonstration faced heavy disruption when Delhi law enforcement officials deployed barricades and stopped the buses carrying the politicians. This intervention caused party workers to flood the streets, surround police personnel, and lead to numerous detentions. Both Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra were taken into custody and faced police filings for the second consecutive day during those clashes. Today's event proceeded with much less friction as the buses travelled a distance of four and a half kilometres to the Yamuna riverbanks without police interference. The MPs stepped out upon arrival and spent hours sitting quietly on the grass before boarding their transport and departing.
Demands
These nationwide demonstrations, which also saw action in cities like Mumbai and Bengaluru led by the Abhijeet Dipke-founded Cockroach Janta Party, demand that the Chief Election Commissioner step down from his post. The controversy erupted after media reports revealed that two fellow commissioners raised concerns regarding a voter re-verification drive. Those internal objections pointed out unauthorized alterations to a specific registration form along with the centralisation of database control. The poll body subsequently reversed those form changes and initiated special drives to register voters who had been left out. Speaking from a police van on Wednesday, Rahul Gandhi vowed that the demonstrations will persist until the election chief resigns.
Context
Electoral oversight bodies in India operate as independent constitutional authorities tasked with running free and fair polls across the country. Tensions between opposition parties and election officials typically arise when political groups accuse administrators of bias or procedural unfairness during major voter exercises. Public demonstrations near national monuments like Raj Ghat serve as a traditional method for Indian political groups to stage high-profile protests against government actions.
