Micronutrient gaps blamed for frequent illness and fatigue, says Delhi doctor

Frequent bouts of illness, persistent fatigue, dull skin and shortness of breath are often linked to micronutrient deficiencies, according to Dr Sharad Bedi, senior consultant in internal medicine at Medanta‑The Medicity in Gurugram. Micronutrients such as vitamins and minerals support energy levels, cognition, muscle performance, immune health, bone strength and the ageing process. The doctor explained that the amount of these nutrients reaching the body depends on the foods chosen, portion sizes and cooking methods; over‑cooking vegetables can destroy heat‑sensitive vitamins like vitamin C and B vitamins. A diet rich in fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean protein and dairy can provide most required micronutrients, but busy schedules, skipping meals, reliance on processed foods and restrictive diets can still create gaps. Limited sun exposure can lower vitamin D levels. Multivitamin supplements are meant to fill gaps, not replace whole foods, and can help maintain or restore micronutrient sufficiency when paired with healthy eating. Dr Bedi highlighted vitamin D, B‑complex vitamins, iron and calcium as nutrients to watch, urging people to address gaps before symptoms worsen. He compared regular exercise and health check‑ups to keeping micronutrient levels adequate for overall well‑being. Context
Modern lifestyles often involve irregular meals and indoor work, which can reduce intake of essential vitamins and minerals and limit sunlight needed for vitamin D synthesis, making nutrient gaps a common health concern.
