South Africa have ruled out fast bowler Kagiso Rabada for the first Test against Australia and have opted for a two‑spinner attack. Rabada missed the recent ODI series with a hamstring injury and has not played an official match since the IPL in May. Captain Temba Bavuma said the team took a conservative route, giving Rabada extra days to reach as close to 100 % fitness as possible before bringing him back. Bavuma added that once he receives the green light, Rabada is expected in the starting line‑up, but he declined to comment on Rabada’s availability for the second or third Tests. In Rabada’s place, Anrich Nortje makes his first Test appearance since March 2023 against West Indies. Nortje, who has largely focused on T20 cricket lately, impressed in the nets and was given the call after training with a red ball under national bowling coach Piet Botha. David Bedingham returns at number three; the 32‑year‑old last played in the WTC 2025‑27 cycle in July 2025 versus Zimbabwe. The spin duo of Keshav Maharaj and Simon Harmer reflects Kingsmead’s recent favour for spin; they last bowled together in South Africa’s 408‑run win in Guwahati last November, which secured a historic series win in India after 25 years. Opening the batting are Aiden Markram and Ryan Rickelton, followed by Bavuma, Tristan Stubbs, Wiaan Mulder and wicket‑keeper Kyle Verreynne. Marco Jansen partners Nortje in pace, with Mulder offering an all‑round option.## Context Kingsmead’s slow, turning pitch often rewards spin, prompting selectors to include two specialist spinners. South Africa’s changes aim to balance the loss of their lead pacer with experienced players who can adapt to local conditions.
