The Carnival Procession

Thousands of people lined the streets in Bridgwater, Somerset, to watch an elaborate illuminated carnival procession featuring rock shows, a circus big top, and Del Boy's three-wheeler from Only Fools and Horses. Volunteer-run clubs across the region spend an entire year preparing the mounted carts for the show. Each cart is designed around a specific theme with synchronized lighting, costumes, movement, and an accompanying soundtrack. Performers wore elaborate costumes to match each theme as the creations weaved through the streets.

Judging And Preparation

Clubs dedicate all twelve months to building and perfecting their entries. Dan Prosser from the Renegades Carnival Club said the preparations are more like a lifestyle than just a hobby, noting his non-carnival friends think his devotion to the event is absolutely nuts. Judges evaluate each cart on several categories, which include presentation, routine or comic content, lighting, costume and make up, and cart construction.

The Finale

The night ended with a traditional finale known as squibbing. About 210 people, including local MP Sir Ashley Fox, took part in the ritual. Participants light a large firework strapped to a solid block of wood on the end of a pole while crowds watch in awe.

Context

Illuminated carnivals are a long-standing tradition in this part of the UK, bringing together local communities through months of volunteer work. Events like this draw visitors from all over the country to support regional clubs and experience local cultural practices.
